CUSTOM BUILT VORTEX,
TORNADO & TWISTER MACHINE
Custom built by Pirate to create a tornado or twister in a controlled studio environment. The vortex can be up to 7' (2.1m) high x 2'6" (0.7m) diameter. It is built to allow easy lighting of the vortex from several sides. This rig has been used, as in this example, to create a white vortex shot at high speed with a borescope to represent a swirling dust cloud on Mars.

A horizontal air cannon cable of firing 19mm & 20mm diameter ball bearings.
Specially built for special effects shots involving high speed cameras. Typically, this air cannon is used with the Microsecond Trigger Delay Kit.

MICROSECOND TRIGGER DELAY KIT
A kit designed & built by Pirate for sending an electronic signal to synchronise a camera with a special effect action.
For example, it can be used with Pirate's air cannons to send a trigger signal to our high speed digital video cameras to begin recording at the instant that the projectile exits the end of the barrel. Futhermore, the trigger signal can be delayed in very small increments (0.0001 of a second) so that a stills camera flash pack can be triggered to take a shot at precisely the right time after an event. This kit is a modern replacement for the Mazoff trigger kit and a Dale Beam or Dale Delay Kit, used by stills photographers for years. This kit has been used several times by N K Image (Nick Knight) for his superb ground-breaking images
Typical use of the kit - mounted on an air cannon, so that a suitable delay can be dialled-in between the ball leaving the cannon's nozzle and a flash pack being fired. This allows a photographer to fine tune the point at which an image is taken during a high-speed event. The kit has been used extensively by Nick Knight to great effect, in for example the album cover for Massive Attack's 100th Window. Alternatively, the exit signal can be used to trigger our high speed digital video camera to start recording, thus utilising the entire camera memory. The CSI New York titles are an example of the kind of shot in which it can be used.

TRANSPARENT GLASS OVEN
Custom designed & built by Pirate for filming baking or roasting and effects shots such as a time-lapse of drying flowers.
It is built to allow easy lighting of the subject from several sides whilst it is within a working oven. Please note the maximum temperature inside the oven is 170 degrees Centigrade. This rig has been used, for example, in a Roch commercial for anti-ageing cream showing the rapid ageing of leaves etc. as a metaphor for the ageing process of human skin. Nice. Internal working dimensions: 400mm x 520mm x 360mm high. The glass is toughened.

LARGE BLOWER (WIND MACHINE)
A powerful 3KW wind machine.
Based on a squirrel cage fan with a 3KW motor, giving a more linear air flow compared to the cork-screwing air flow from the usual axial fan wind machines offered by lighting hire companies. 340mm x 340mm exit grille, with 3kW, 3 phase motor, mounted on an adjustable angle bracket on a castorred trolley, or can be mounted using the standard lighting spigot fitting.

HYDRAULIC SCISSOR LIFT
A custom made scissor lift with bearings at each joint for a super smooth action, powered by a hydraulic pump. The platform measures approx 42" x 14" (1000mm x 350mm), with a minimum height of 10" and a travel of 24" it is capable of lifting up to half a tonne smoothly. Base size of approximately 4' x 4' (1300mm x 1300mm)

GIMBAL PLATFORM
